Karl Evangelista and Grex with Hafez Modirzadeh Solo

April 26, 2013 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$10 – $15

New Directions in Asian Improvisation, New Wave Filipino American Jazz

Taglish is a new work from guitarist/composer Karl Evangelista and art rock outfit Grex (a band Tiny Mix Tapes calls “essential current-and-future listening”)–an exploration of the multifaceted nature of both contemporary music and 21st century immigrant culture. The project synthesizes jazz, American song, 20th century experimentalism, and Filipino folk melody into a a genuinely multicultural, trans-idiomatic work–a sound that is at once universal and starkly personal. The evening also features a rare solo set from legendary Bay Area saxophonist and conceptualist Hafez Modirzadeh.

Karl Evangelista – guitar, vocals
Rei Scampavia Evangelista – keyboards, vocals
Francis Wong – saxophones
Rob Ewing – trombone
John-Carlos Perea – bass
Robert Lopez – percussion, drums
Jordan Glenn – drums

Hafez Modrizadeh: saxophone

“[A] near-seamless blend of modern jazz, contemporary structuralist composition, indie rock, and blues rock.” – Tiny Mix Tapes

“[Grex] makes for an otherworldly experience that, while drawing on the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and classic jazz, creates something completely original…” (Eugene Weekly)
