Renzi/Johnston/Shulman/Vogler: “Bye Bye Bartok” – Reimagining Great Symphonic & Chamber Themes

January 13, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$15 – $20

What if Béla Bartók wrote “Bye Bye Blackbird”? What if Charlie Parker wrote a prelude in E, or Sun Ra, a symphony in C? We may never know, but four Bay Area voices come together to groove, swing, and do their thing over themes by Bach, Bartok, Satie, Tchaikovsky, and others, followed by a set of their own compositions. Chamber jazz from the heart, this evening marks the inaugural performance of the new quartet.

FEATURING:
Darren Johnston – trumpet
Matt Renzi – woodwinds
Adam Shulman – piano
Eric Vogler – bass

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
The group represents a curious mix of musical personalities, some of which are most known for swinging straight-ahead lyricism, and others as free exploring alchemists. Their sound together is a balance of all the above, dynamically nuanced dialog set in a creative and swinging context. Collectively, members have played with the Nice Guy Trio, Marcus Shelby, Stefon Harris, Michael Formanek, Ben Monder, Myra Melford, Meklit Hadero, and many others.
