Día de los Muertos is an extraordinarily auspicious time for the Mission community, and the Red Poppy Art House is humbled to participate in the annual celebration that honors the ancestral memory of the departed. We invite all of our community to join us on Sunday, November 1 and Monday, November 2 for a weekend of art, food, and remembrance.

On Sunday evening, curator Alejandro Meza unveils the exhibition, El Mito Contemporáneo del Más Allá, featuring commissioned altars that pay homage to the dead. The exhibition will be complemented by food (tamales de carne, tamales vegetarianos, champurrado) and live music curated by Sofia Elias.

Monday evening’s program opens with a rumba session featuring Los Rumberos de Cali. Concurrently, Sofia Elias, Adriana Camarena, and Florencia Rojo lead a procession honoring those who have died as a result of police violence. The procession will begin at Alex Nieto’s memorial site on Bernal Hill, stop at Amilcar Perez-Lopez’s memorial site on Folsom Street, and end at the Red Poppy Art House. A guided discussion will follow, led by community members who have lost loved ones to police violence, including Elvira and Refugio Nieto. The night will conclude with a series of live performances honoring victims of police violence, including the work of poet Ben Bac Sierra, a close friend of the deceased Alex Nieto.
