The Adam Shulman Quintet: Strays: The Music of Billy Strayhorn

January 1, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$10 – $20

Leaning toward a bebop aesthetic, Adam Shulman and his band adapt Billy Strayhorn’s repertoire to a small ensemble with an emphasis on soloing and spontaneous group interaction. The music of Strayhorn is lyrical and dramatic with an underpinning of great harmonic depth. Refreshing in an age in jazz where angular and heady music seems to predominate, he succeeds in being both cerebral and soulful at the same time.

Adam Shulman has been a staple of the Bay Area jazz scene since his move in 2002. In addition to leading his own groups, he has played as a sideman with internationally-renowned artists such as Stefon Harris, Willie Jones III, Miguel Zenon, Mark Murphy, Luciana Souza, Paula West, Larry Coryell, Sean Jones, Grant Stewart, and Bobby Hutcherson.

Featuring:
Patrick Wolff – tenor saxophone
Mike Olmos – trumpet
Jon Arkin – drums
Adam Shulman – piano
Eric Markowitz – bass

“Shulman’s introspective approach to playing and composing has the potential to reach a wide-ranging audience while remaining mindful of artistic integrity.” – John Barron, jazzreview.com
